Description:
In the case of Puccini, however, only 11 songs were published during his lifetime, and they were written sporadically during the early and late stages of his career. The first edition of the "Lieder" published in 2010 contains 16 songs, and this CD contains the piano parts arranged for orchestral accompaniment for a large orchestra. The arrangement was made in 1979. The arrangement is by Johannes Xaver Schachtner, a composer and conductor born in Germany in 1985. The score was published by Boosey & Hawks in 2020 and this is the first recording. Puccini's songs are basically written in the bel canto style, and the piano is often limited to a simple accompaniment, but Schachtner sometimes uses the orchestrations in Puccini's operas as a reference, but also makes bold and original arrangements. The powerful and brilliant singing of Castronovo, one of the tenors of our time, adds to the charm of this recording. *This is the same sound source as the Lieder section of the CD "Giacomo Puccini: Orchestral Works and Lieder" (900349).
